Halama Farms is located on the slopes of Mount Hualalai, above the Kona coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are about three miles east of Kailua-Kona and two miles north of the village of Holualoa, which is known principally for its artistic flavor. In addition to the art galleries and studios, Holualoa hosts a bed and breakfast inn, a post office, a small grocery store, a gourmet coffee shop, a florist, an elementary school, and a church or two. Holualoa is also home to hundreds of small coffee farms.
Kona at one time was the only coffee-growing region in the USA. Even now, Hawaii is the only coffee-growing state. Coffee has been grown in Kona for over 170 years.
In earlier times, the community would pitch in to pick coffee at each individual farm when it became ripe. Since some coffee "cherry" (the soft, grape-sized fruit containing the coffee bean) inevitably fell to the ground, the keiki (children) would follow the grown-ups as they harvested, picking up the individual cherry from the ground with chop sticks. Schools used to have a harvest break to allow the keiki to help with the coffee harvest.
Halama Farms Coffee
The peak of Mount Hualalai, the volcanic mountain on which we live, is a little over 8000 feet in elevation and protects the Kona coast from wind and rough weather. Halama Farms is situated just above the 2000 foot elevation. It is the combination of elevation, cloud cover, abundant rainfall, protection from winds, and nutrient-rich soil that permits us to grow our wonderful coffee.
